Coding Challenge #2 (You Pick)

YOU PICK (Deadline 01/29/2008)

For our second challenge, we are letting you decide. We want to see what you can come up with. This will be conducted on the honor system. In 2 hours or less, come up with something for either the web or a windows application. The program can be in any language you choose. The only rule is it has to be done in less than 2 hours. Lets see what you've got.

Service Controller

This is a windows form and class library project that queues the local machine for the list of serivces. It is the proof of concept application for a scheduled task utility and even a remote management tool suite I am considering developing the future.

The windows form will allow you to list the services that are currently installed on your machine, their current status and if they are stoppable. A stoppable service can be started. As started service can be stopped and a started service can be restarted. The form uses Impersonation as well so be sure to edit the appconfig file before running you must be an administrator to start and stop services.

The tool was created so that I can create an EXE that uses the utility to check if a particular service is started and start it again if it has stopped for some reason.

IpTray

Most simply, a task tray icon that displays TX/RX of the most recent packet. Unfortunately, it chews some CPU time because DoEvents() eats time like no other.

Look in the comments in Program.cs for all information, packet_stuff.cs is NOT mine. its reused code.

Coding Challenge #1 (DotNetNuke Module)

Create a logo rotator for our sponsor section.

Some ideas may be a 3D carousel. Ferris Wheel Style? The Price is Right Wheel? Get creative! The most creative version of this will be the winner. Want to try Silverlight? WPF? What a better way even if you are not a big visual person.

Requirements and Rules:

Flash Based Image Rotator

I did this in flash. Its currently the one used on this site. It uses action script 2.0. I did this in flash because there were enough tutorials out there to do it quickly.

Uses an xml file to define a dynamic set of N images and spaces them equally around an oval to and uses some cool math tricks to make them look like they spin in 3D.

Flash source is included but images are not. Must supply your own images. Enjoy picking it apart. I would like to do this in silverlight some day when I can find the time.
